ANDesign Identity
My identity is among one of my greatest assets. It is the sum of what I believe, offer, say and do in the design community — and all of the interactions that influence perceptions of me. As a designer, my identity illustrates my promise to deliver clear, consistent, meaningful interactions with my audiences. It is designed to engage, inform and convey meaning in ways that are uniquely me.
The emergence of “AND” came about rather by chance. My name, Abbey Newkirk, along with Design made a perfectly well-formed word: and. My next exploration was to think of what AND meant to me as a designer. I toyed with ampersands but they felt too ornate for me and I couldn’t relate it back to a design philosophy. The plus sign not only acts as a great design tool but reinforces the idea of connection, unison and design as an additive process. I am constantly adding new works to my collections and adopting new skills and ideas. By adding experience, skills, education and inspiration to my life, I am becoming a more developed, passionate designer.

TEACHING ARTIFACTS
(CV • TEACHING PHILOSOPHY • CURRICULUM)
In hopes of one day pursuing a career in education, it only felt right to create documents pertaining to this ambition. These works are meant to prove the importance and effectiveness of design education as well as my understanding of design’s importance on the development of creative minds. As an educator, I hope to create a passion and vigor for design that instills the value of process, research, concept and meaning. The bliss of education hides in its ability to provide designers with the tools they need to create beauty without the limitations set by corporate business and client expectations. I want to promote the power of imagination and creativity to once again rejuvenate design.

MASTERS CANDIDACY REVIEW
(PROCESS BOOK)
In order to earn my MA degree at SCAD, all students had to complete a final review to a panel of professors depicting their growth throughout the program. Each project referenced in the presentation had to be accompanied by it’s comprehensive process in a polished, branded book. The book had to include all necessary research, sketches, prototypes and final solutions.

MASTERS CANDIDACY REVIEW
(REVIEW BOOKLET/NEWSPAPER)
In addition to the detailed 100 page process book, each candidate was required to create a branded review booklet to be shared with the review committee. The booklet had to include a written synopsis of the presentation highlighting the relevance of the assignments presented, specific to my intellectual and professional growth during my years at SCAD. It also featured a designed resume and a copy of the my degree audit.
I chose to layout my review booklet in the form of a newspaper. My reasoning was simple; newspapers deliver facts and present them in a compelling narrative that can therefore shape the minds of its readers. I wanted to portray my time at SCAD with the same personal touch as that of a newspaper digest.
